ADVANCED STUDIES IN ARABIC

SYLLABUS

This course is designed for students who have completed the 9 levels of the Arabic Language Program.

It aims at furthering students' fluency in the Arabic language through exposure to and study of authentic documents from both the United Nations and the Arab Media. These include the following:

1.       Printed documents to develop reading proficiency;

2.       Audio documents to develop listening proficiency;

3.       Video documents to develop listening ability;

4.       Any combination of 1-3 above, whenever available, so that one skill can reinforce another.

Arabic language grammar is regularly revisited, in context.

Students are encouraged to produce written and oral reports on materials studied.

Students are given the syllabus and materials ahead of time, so that they can come prepared to the following class and so that they can capitalize on class time.

An effort is made to also expose students to native speakers of Arabic (guest speakers, in-house, as well as outside lectures and cultural events).
